Horizons

In 2009, Horizons at Dedham Country Day School (DCD) became the first Horizons affiliate in Massachusetts. Horizons at DCD draws students from the Dedham and Boston communities and provides free-of-charge six-week program of academic and cultural enrichment, swimming lessons, weekly field trips, and social support. The summer of 2012 brought 74 children to Horizons at DCD, including pre-kindergarten students to third graders. The plan is to add a class of 16 every summer until full implementation in 2017, when the program will serve students from pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Horizons at DCD is committed to helping underserved youth succeed in school, build confidence, and realize their full potential as individuals. In each grade are students who are considered “achievers” and students who have potential but are under-performing in their classes and can benefit from a low student-teacher ratio. Targeted reading instruction, combined with project-based STEM and theme curricula, not only erases the “summer slide” but sends students back to school better prepared. The average summer growth in Horizons student scores nationally is three months in both reading and math.
