The “public purpose of private schools” can be defined in many ways, as a fall 2012 survey of NAIS member schools details. While traditional environmental and community service programs still dominate, a growing number of schools are implementing additional programs, including establishing partnerships with public or charter schools, creating centers of teaching excellence to serve independent and public schools, and founding charter schools.
