Mentors in the Community

Student Mentoring
Hockaday School

Hockaday’s Mentors in the Community program involves taking highly qualified students from Hockaday and putting them in a leadership role at the Walker Middle School, a public school in the Dallas Independent School District. With an average of only 58% of DISD students reading at grade level at the end of 6th grade and 62% on level for math, the program is designed to complement the curriculum covered in the DISD end of year standardized tests (STAAR).  The Hockaday girls tutor and lead students through a curriculum that they have developed which reinforces the necessary math, science and reading skills. Utilizing their strengths, including their Spanish skills to help English language learners with reading, the girls are engaged first-hand in the high-stakes learning that takes place at Walker Middle School.
